The following are five general classifications of the Hukum Shari-iy:
1. Fardhu (Wajib)
which means obligatory.
(1) Fardu 'ain - obligatory to every Muslim, such as prayer five (5) times
a day. It is given reward by doing it and punishable by omitting it.
(2) Fardhu Kifaayah - obligatory to a Muslim community such as praying
for a dead Muslim. It is given reward when Muslims of the place
concerned does it and punishable of every Muslim by omitting it.
2. Sunnah means
desirable, such as giving charity to the poor. it is given
reward by doing it and no punishment by omitting it.
3. Mubah means
permissible, such as sleeping, and sitting down. No reward
nor punishment by doing it or omitting it.
4. Haram means
forbidden, examples are killing and stealing. It is given
reward by
omitting it and punishable by doing it.
5. Makruh means
undesirable, such as smoking. It is given reward by omitting
it and no punishment by doing it.
